Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Games

In 1978, the Yellow Magic Orchestra (Y.M.O.) was formed in Japan around founding member Haruomi Hosono, and it enjoys a cult status comparable to that of Germany’s Kraftwerk.

Some even say that the Japanese feel this cult phenomenon even more intensely, often comparing Y.M.O. to the Beatles craze of the 1960s — especially since a well-known hairstyle, the "Techno Cut", still popular in Japan today, originates from this band.Since vocals occasionally appeared in their songs — sometimes even shouted in English — the American label A&M Records took notice of these Asian techno-punks and signed them, likely also because experimental pop from Japan was still quite rare on the international scene. Their slightly jittery track “Computer Games” even made it into the charts in both Europe and the USA!

To this day, Yellow Magic Orchestra continues to perform live around the world. Nowadays, Ryūichi Sakamoto has a strong influence on their sound, which has also resonated well with jazz-leaning fans. As a composer and producer, Sakamoto has long since made his mark in Hollywood and would easily fill an entire chapter on his own — with solo career highlights like The Last Emperor and Femme Fatale.

Update: Sakamoto was committed to environmental and peace causes, collaborated with artists like Alva Noto and David Sylvian, and seamlessly merged traditional Japanese sounds with cutting-edge technology. Despite serious illness, he continued composing until the end. He passed away on March 28, 2023 – his legacy lives on as a bridge between cultures. RIP.
